So, at the end of the night, we had a square of four and a rectange of six going at the same time. That lasted about half a tip until we decided to merge them and ended up with a giant rectangle of ten couples. Here is our giant rectange where bigger is better - and even more fun!

Star Eights May 21

We had a busy evening working through extended positions on some of the A2 calls like facing hourglasses and some new choreography discoveries from Bob. We did a six couple square which also added a new dimension on traditional calls and how the square gets split up.

We will not be dancing at Star Eights next Sunday as everyone will be dancing at the Golden State Roundup festival in San Ramon, CA. I will be doing several sessions over the long weekend. I hope to see you all there!

Advance Squares May 19

This was the opening dance to the 2017 season of Advanced Squares of Fremont. This is an A2 monthly dance series that starts in May and ends with the December holiday dance. Different callers are brought in each month for our dancing pleasure. This month we had Rick Hampton from Visalia, California who kept us all moving with creative A2 choreography.

This series of dances has just a slight difference in the round dance format. We usually only have 15 minutes of pre-rounds at 8:00pm and double rounds between tips starting at 8:15pm. Rick got caught in some unplanned construction traffic and was running late, so we had a rare treat with extended rounds to fill in until he got setup and ready to go.

Since it's an advanced club, most rounds are at phase 3 and 4 with some of the harder phase 2's thrown in, depending on who comes and what is requested. Here's what we ended up doing for this dance.

Galaxy Rounds April 25th

Last night (Tuesday), I had the opportunity again to fill in for Sue and Phil Harris at their Phase 3-4 club. I always enjoy cueing there as it's a good chance to get all the rhythms and such a variety of round dances for everyone. A lot of our dancers went with Sue and Phil to the Round-A-Vous Round Dance festival in Nevada, so that left an opportunity for some personal review and help wherever needed.

The class has been working on Open and Closed Hip Twists, so I needed to get out all my cha's and rumba's that had those figures for review and practice. The class is 3 hours long in total, so when planning, I figured on 8 dances per half hour, so 48 dances to program, which is a lot! We certainly don't get through that many as sometimes we dance some twice in a row after review of some figures, skip some or teach some new sequences before new dances. I do try and get something new and different in this class also for some more variety. Because of the figures being worked, I needed to insert other rhythms between all the cha's and rumba's.

So, we ended up with 25 out of the 48 dances I programmed and we only did one entire repeat. I always make a plan for a dance class such as this as it's much easier and quicker to pick and choose from a list that meets the evening's criteria. Everyone was tuckered out, we did our friendship circle and thanked everyone for coming and being there. It was a really good session.
